Top 10: Horror Films

Not many current films in the mix - only one film made past the 80's. A big part of the reason is that horror as a genre was taken a lot more seriously back in the day. Look at the director's of some of the films that made my list - Cronenberg, Kubrick, Carpenter, Friedkin. These guys were some of, if not the, best directors of their generation. Nowadays it's mostly hack directors who work exclusively in horror that are responsible for the majority of the output. I'd love for Fincher or Tarantino to take a shot at making a horror film and see if they can bring some quality back.

10. The Brood
- Mutant dwarves, doesn't get much creepier than that.
The Brood

9. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - I watched this when I was way too young and it messed up my sleep for years.
A Nightmare on Elm Street

8. The Ring (2002) - My introduction to hair horror and to it's still the scariest. I prefer this american re-make to the japanese origional.
The Ring

7. Re-Animator - This whole trilogy is pretty great, but the first one is the strongest.

6. The Shining - Kubrick's only horror film, and because he's the master it's the technically best film of this genre.
The Shining

5. The Omen (1976) - Lots of amazing gory deaths and a great, creepy kid.
The Omen

4. Evil Dead II - This and Army of Darkness were on regular rotation throughout my highschool years. The best ever blend of horror and comedy.
Evil Dead II

3. The Thing (1982) - Probably John Carpenter's best work. Him and Kurt Russel were guarunteed magic back in the day.
The Thing

2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - No one's ever made a slasher film better, and this was made 30 years ago on a shoe string budget.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre

1. The Exorcist - This is the only horror film my mom's ever seen and it turned her off scary movies for life. It's the only movie I was banned from seeing while growing up and once I finally got a chance to check it out I can see why. Without a doubt this is the scariest film of all time.
The Exorcist

Honourable mention - Poltergeist, The Grudge, Dead Alive, The Descent.
