Top 10 - Films of 2011

This was a pretty dissapointing year for film. I thought there were a lot of OK to good films, just not many great ones.

10. The Skin I Live In - Most diabolical twist ending of any movie I've seen in a long time.

9. 50/50 - Most emotional filmgoing experience of the year, plus it was super funny.

7. Hugo - Incredible film, as are all of Scorcese's. It's just a little too kid oriented for me to want to want to revisit in the future. I'll probably pick up the blu-ray, but mostly for the special features.

6. Attack the Block - This has grown on me more than any other film this year. And other than my top pick, it'll be the one I rewatch the most.

6. Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy - Best acted and probably smartest film of the year.

5. Bridesmaids - Funniest movie of the year.

4. The Muppets - Most Nostalgia inducing film of the year.

3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - The biggest "surprise that it was actually really good" film of the year becase it was put out by Fox and directed by a relative unknown. Andy Serkis and the animators at Weta deserve a tonne of credit for creating Cesar - hopefully he gets the oscar nom he deserves. Also, watching apes get bloody revenge on prick humans is always fun to watch.

2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - David Fincher is the most skilled director working, and he does the best job possible with the source material. Also, Lisbeth Sander is without a doubt the female badass of the year.

1. Drive - I didn't really like director Winding Refn's previous 2 films, Bronson and Valhalla Rising. Both were great concepts, but a little too artsy for my tastes. This I thought had just the correct amount of style. And making the usually sensitive, doe eyes, Ryan Gosling the male badass of the year was an incredible feat.

Honourable mentions: The Guard, Kung-Fu Panda 2, The Tree of Life, The Ides of March, Immortals, Footloose, Fright Night, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Super 8, The Beaver, I Saw the Devil, Rango, Fast Five, Moneyball, Source Code, The Adventures of Tintin.
