Top 10: Films of 2001

10. The Man Who Wasn't There - You don't see enough black and white films nowadays. The Coens do a great job of using it here to make an old school noirish flick.

9. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Dwarves, elves AND wizards. Awesome.

8. Moulin Rouge - I had my doubts about this film going in. I don't get particularly excited about musicals or period films, but this did a good job of keeping things pumping and engaging.
Moulin Rouge

7. Donnie Darko - Still not 100% sure if I understand everythign that's going on here, but I picked up on enough of it to know it's fantastic.

6. Sexy Beast - From Ghandi to the biggest rat bastard on the planet. That's good acting.

5. Memento - It still takes me a while to catch up to the structure of this film even though I've seen it a number of times. It's an incredibly cool idea, and Nolan pulls it off really well.

4. Monsters Inc. - My wife's favorite Pixar film. Probably the cutest film they've made so far.
Monsters Inc.

3. Amelie - Jeunet blends his extremely well planned and designed direction with this quirky script perfectly. A balance he hasn't achieved before or since.

2. Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Totally unlike any other film I saw this year or probably any other year. It's rare that you find a film this original and have it still be this good.

1. The Royal Tenenbaums - Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson's final team-up as co-writers. Anderson's films haven't been this funny since.

Honourable mentions - Ghost World, Mulholland Drive, The Devil's Backbone, Vanilla Sky, Nowhere in Africa, The Others.
